CES is the world's most influential technology trade show, bringing 150,000+ industry leaders to Las Vegas each January. International exhibitors — from Korean electronics giants to European startups — need an ATA Carnet to bring prototypes, demo units, and display systems into the United States without paying import duties. Given the high per-unit value of cutting-edge consumer electronics, carnets routinely save exhibitors substantial amounts.
Non-US companies exhibiting at CES need a carnet issued by USCIB (for US-based applicants) or their home country's national guaranteeing association. The carnet covers professional equipment, commercial samples, and exhibition goods — all common CES exhibitor categories. Carnets are valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue.
6–8 weeks before CES (mid-November)
Start your equipment list. CES is in January — holiday processing slowdowns make early applications critical. Compile all items with serial numbers and USD values.
4–5 weeks before (early December)
Submit carnet application. Standard processing is 5–10 business days, but December holiday closures at USCIB can add delays. Rush service available.
2 weeks before CES
Receive your carnet. Reconcile with freight manifest — add any late additions before you travel. Amendments after submission require time.
Early January arrival at LAS
Present carnet to US Customs and Border Protection at the airport or freight terminal. CBP stamps the importation counterfoil.
During CES show days
Keep carnet accessible at your booth. CBP conducts show-floor inspections during CES — your carnet is your proof of duty-free status.
Post-CES departure
Present carnet to CBP before departing US soil. Obtain re-exportation stamps. Do not leave without them.
Within 2 weeks home
Return completed carnet to EasyCarnet for USCIB discharge.
