When applying for an ATA Carnet, one of the most important documents you'll need to prepare is the General List—a detailed inventory of all the equipment you plan to temporarily import or export. This list must be accurate, complete, and formatted correctly to avoid delays at customs or issues with your application.
Each item on your carnet needs to be individually described with enough detail that a customs officer can identify it, including the item description, quantity, weight, value, and any identifying marks such as serial numbers or model numbers.
Your equipment list should be organized in a clear, tabular format with consistent columns. For each item, include:
Items should be grouped logically—for example, all camera bodies together, followed by lenses, then accessories. Avoid vague descriptions like "electronics" or "equipment"; instead, be specific such as "Sony FX6 Cinema Camera Body" or "Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens."
Keep in mind that the total value on your carnet determines the bond amount required, so accurate valuations are essential. Use fair market value or replacement cost for each item. If you're traveling with cases or containers, these should also be listed as separate line items with their own values.
Once your list is complete, double-check that the totals match and that every item you're bringing is accounted for—customs officers will verify your carnet against your actual goods, and discrepancies can lead to fines or seizure of items not properly documented.
