What You Need to Know About Carnets for South Africa

Non-EU Country β€” Individual Entry & Exit Processing Required

South Africa is not an EU member. Each entry and exit must be individually processed by SARS Customs. OR Tambo International (JNB) has a dedicated channel for film and media equipment, making it the most efficient entry point for large equipment shipments. Plan for thorough customs inspections, particularly for high-value items.

    Entry Requirements

    • Present carnet to SARS Customs upon arrival
    • Complete item list with detailed descriptions, serial numbers, and values in USD
    • At JNB, use the dedicated film/media equipment customs channel when available
    • Obtain entry stamp and counterfoil; retain all documentation for re-export

    Restrictions & Limitations

    • Consumable goods and items for sale are prohibited under a carnet
    • All items must be re-exported from South Africa before carnet expiry
    • Certain broadcast and communications equipment may require additional permits from ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of South Africa)
