One of the most common questions we receive is whether items can be added to an ATA Carnet after it has already been issued and processed.
Unfortunately, the answer is no.
Once an ATA Carnet has been finalized and issued, the item list becomes part of the official customs document and cannot be modified. This means that new items cannot be added, even if they were accidentally left off the original application.
What Are My Options?
Option A: Travel Without the Carnet for the Missing Item
You may choose to bring the missing item separately, such as in your personal luggage or checked baggage. However, because the item is not listed on the ATA Carnet, customs authorities may require you to pay duties, taxes, or provide additional documentation when entering or leaving a country.
While this option may work in some situations, it does carry the risk of delays, additional costs, or customs complications.
Option B: Apply for a Second ATA Carnet
If the missing item is valuable, critical to your trip, or likely to attract customs attention, the safest option is often to obtain a second ATA Carnet that includes the additional item(s).
